Cleaning and Maintaining a Sauna

To enjoy continued use of your sauna, it is important to properly clean it and keep up with maintenance. The philosophy behind saunas is one of relaxation, and having a dirty sauna, or a sauna in disrepair will not provide a relaxing atmosphere.

The following steps will help you properly maintain and clean your sauna:

  1. Clean up any garbage or debris that may have accumulated in the sauna.
  2. Wipe the benches and floor surfaces with a bucket of warm water with a gentle detergent in it and a rag or sponge. (It is important to not use heavy detergents as these may leave chemical residues in your sauna which could later emit toxic fumes, or discolor the wood.
  3. Rocks from the heater can be cleaned by soaking them in warm soapy water once they are completely cooled. If a rock is cracked during the sauna make sure to remove it so that it does not damage the top of the heater.
  4. Make sure that all broken slats are repaired. If necessary whole benches can be replaced as this is often the part of the sauna that sees the most wear and tear. New benches will give your sauna a clean new look.
